If you’re anything like me, you love to travel but don’t love the hefty price tag that comes with it. That’s why I’m excited to share with you a way to save on flights and even earn a FREE companion pass with Southwest Airlines. By following a few simple steps, you can unlock a world of travel possibilities and explore places you might not have otherwise been able to afford. So, let’s dive in and start earning those free points!
The Companion Pass is a benefit offered by Southwest Airlines that allows you to choose one person to fly with you for free (not including taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way) every time you purchase or redeem points for a flight. To qualify, you need to fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 135,000 qualifying points* in a calendar year. The designated companion can be changed up to three times per calendar year.
To take advantage of the current offer, you need to open a Southwest Rapid Rewards personal credit card and spend $1,000 within the first three months to earn 50,000 bonus points. Business owners can earn up to 80,000 bonus points with a Southwest Rapid Rewards business credit card.
To earn the additional 85,000 points needed for the Companion Pass, you need to open a business card ($199 fee) and spend $5,000 within the first three months, and open a personal card ($69 fee) and spend $1,000 within the first three months. This will earn you a total of 130,000 bonus points. You can earn the remaining 5,000 points needed for the Companion Pass by spending an additional $5,000 on either of your cards.
The total cost for two years of fees is $536. You’ll want to keep the cards open for two years to make the most of your free yearly anniversary points (12,000 points), so an additional $360 ($180 for you and $180 for the companion) in travel spend has been earned. As soon as you’ve earned the 135K points, the Companion Pass kicks in.
By spending the original bonus quota ($5,000 and $1,000 during the first three months) and then spending $1,000 each month thereafter, you can earn 42,000 points, equal to $630 for you and $630 in travel for your companion. This is a total of $1,260 in free airfare.
With five referrals allowed each year, you can earn up to 100,000 points annually, equal to $3,000 for you and $3,000 for your companion. This is a total of $6,000 in airfare.
In total, you can potentially earn over 284,000 points, equal to $4,260 for you and $4,260 for your companion. This is a grand total of $8,520 in free airfare by spending $536 in fees and using your cards to make purchases and pay bills. You can actually earn more by spending more on your new cards, surpassing $1,000 on each card spend each month for the remainder of this year and all of next year.
